FAQ

BookPotato are passionate about books; creating books and sharing books. We offer authors to submit their books for FREE (just like other self publishing sites) we then support each book on our site with additional marketing suggestions and opportunities (unlike other self publishing sites), because we are super keen to sell all our books too! The basic package is FREE, additional packages vary in cost.

Because we use anonymous information about you to help support our Indie (independent) Authors! With your basic details (which remains anonymous at all times, see our privacy policy and Terms of Use), we can offer our Indie Authors the basic demographics of their customers who have purchased their books; information that is particularly valuable for building a good understanding of their specific audience, producing desirable content for their next book and for the continued marketing of their books. This service is so helpful for the success of Indie Authors but is not offered by other self-publishing platforms. Buying a book through BookPotato.org supports Indie Authors to keep producing books, they just want to be seen in amongst the other potatoes!

So help us to support indies and offer better things to you.
The quicker we can build subscribers and users of the site, the more beneficial it will be for all the PotatoCreatives that use us, the more discount we can receive from wholesalers and the more we can reduce the price of books for our BookPotato Family. Also, a large database of subscribers means we can request freebies or big reductions from large well-known companies, offering bigger and better Sweet Potato Gifts!

We can only continue offering BookPotato.org if we can make it a sustainable business. If you agree with our cause then please prioritise buying books from BookPotato or give us a chance to sell YOUR book on BookPotato.

We specialise in supporting indie authors. We offer additional marketing for their books that is not currently being offered by any other self publishing platform (FREE when possible! Alternative packages are also available at cost effective prices, however, there is no obligation to purchase additional marketing)
BookPotato are new and genuinely want to sell the books of our indie authors. Why? Because it can be exceptionally hard to get books seen without the backing of a publishing company, yet many amazing books are not always accepted by the gatekeepers of these publishing companies, this could be for a variety of reasons; maybe due to gatekeepers personal reasons/opinions; the book being too controversial or political; or simply the sheer volume of books being offered to these companies, makes it inevitable that some corkers are going to be accidentally overlooked.

Many authors choose NOT to apply to a traditional publishing company, opting to ‘self publish’ instead as they want more control over their content, artwork and marketing, they also want the biggest whack of royalties (why not, it’s THEIR BOOK!) which is usually a significantly smaller percentage if using traditional publishing services. That’s why we support indie authors as much as possible. Their success is our success!
BookPotato.org was founded by Thomas Carter and Carrie Bevins. After using large companies for self publishing their books, they were left feeling very strongly that the service they received could and should, be more supportive and more profitable to the author.
These were the primary issues with other self publishing sites that BookPotato attempts to resolve:
For busy authors who don’t have time to invest in learning marketing strategies, besides displaying books on a marketplace and the option of paying for adverts, no other marketing support is offered by the platform.

  • We understand that skilled authors are often not skilled in marketing. Many fabulous books are simply not seen, and many fabulous authors are disheartened by lack of sales.
  • BookPotato are a smaller, independent option for publishing and book retail. Uniquely, we offer personalised advice of how to market your book effectively; we are small enough to invest thought in every submitted book and offer complimentary advice to you directly.
  • BookPotato will attend a variety of events (and seek out specific events to market specific genres of our submitted ‘New Potatoes’) during the year; by keeping a working knowledge of our ‘New Potatoes’, we are able to promote books that may interest specific audiences (based on customer need rather than investment oriented).
  • Various marketing packages are also available at an additional cost. We try to keep all fees minimal and maintain transparency at all times, ensuring no hidden costs and that you are aware of how your money is spent and how sales were affected.
  • We genuinely want to sell your book!

We are passionate about producing and sharing books, but on a business level, we rely on receiving a percentage from every sale to maintain BookPotato.
Books by new authors get lost in the many pages of books relating to the same topic

  • BookPotato was founded in 2018, thus it is smaller than some of the leading self publishing book sites who boast being a “bigger marketplace.” However, we are building an increasing and significant database of customers who are specifically looking for books and/or specifically choosing to support indie authors and freelance creative roles; your book cannot fail to appear higher up in the listings on a smaller, more relevant, marketplace.
  • BookPotato rank all books by tag words. Some larger companies rank books higher based on their sales, or certain publishers paying to rank books higher, meaning newer indie authors can really struggle for their books to be seen adequately on searches.
  • BookPotato offer individual marketing suggestions and opportunities to suit ANY budget. We are small enough to be able to make individual suggestions to support marketing and to promote your book to relevant potential customers. Currently, no other self publishing website offers this level of marketing support.
  • We genuinely want to sell your book!

A first sale is a big deal to a new author but seemed a bit of an anti-climax on larger self publishing sites

  • BookPotato was founded for the distinct purpose of offering a more indie-centred platform for marketing and selling books. We are also excited about your sales and want to celebrate your milestones with you!
  • When a first sale is completed, we will get in touch to congratulate you and to offer additional advise of how to boost further sales (based on demographics of the first customer and marketing strategies recorded at that time)
  • We will congratulate other specific milestones with additional advice or small gifts to support and celebrate your successes.
  • We genuinely want to sell your book!

Unable to know anything about the demographics of the customers who purchased books (it is helpful to understanding where your audiences are successfully coming from for future sales)

  • Obviously BookPotato cannot give personal information about specific customers, however, we can offer some demographics of your customers. We collate demographics of your customers and offer updates periodically to support your understanding of your target audience and future marketing strategies.
  • We are able to offer individual advise to support individual book sales based on your customer demographics
  • We genuinely want to sell your book!

The PotatoPatch is for PotatoCreatives only.
This is where PotatoCreatives can submit books, purchase marketing packages, network and make meaningful contacts with other PotatoCreatives.

Becoming a PotatoCreative is the most cost effective marketing you can do (a ridiculously low yearly fee for BookPotato to promote the services or books that you offer). We also provide exclusive PotatoCreative access to forums for peer support, networking opportunities, obtaining reviews and posting job requests.

Our yearly fee is requested for;

  • We want to offer BookPotato services to as many people as possible, without discrimination. This leaves us vulnerable of ‘watering down’ the quality of services offered if there are (a) many PotatoCreatives who are promoting their services but not actually committed to completing any work that is being requested (hopefully these people would be quickly exposed via the reviews), or (b) filling the PotatoPatch with ‘Pseudo-PotatoCreatives’ (members who pretend to be authors, editors, illustrators etc but are not actually experienced or skilled in any of these areas). By requesting a nominal fee, we hope to separate the supportive and productive spuds from the non-supportive or unreliable ones
  • We want to offer as much free support to our PotatoCreatives as possible. However, we’re not a charity and BookPotato needs to be funded. The money received for this first marketing package is necessary for funding admin and maintenance costs.

Any profits will be reinvested into BookPotato. Our primary aims for the first year of BookPotato are:

  1. To produce a desirable selling platform that also supports Indie Authors, making their books more profitable to them -we find it incredibly frustrating that authors are not supported to market and sell their books, often falling for ‘vanity publishing scams’ where they loose large sums of money without benefiting their sales; or producing a great book that simply doesn’t sell (or doesn’t earn adequate profit) due to inadequate marketing. Ultimately, many talented authors get disheartened and give up, we want to support these authors to succeed. We genuinely and totally WANT YOUR FEEDBACK! We will discuss and consider every suggestion that is made, if you believe something will improve the site then we want to know about it. We can only improve the site to include what our BookPotato Family want, if our BookPotato Family tell us what they want!
  2.  Build subscribers and users of the site -the quicker we can build subscribers and users of the site, the more beneficial it will be for all the PotatoCreatives that use us, the more discount we can receive from wholesalers and the more we can reduce the price of books for our BookPotato Family. Also, a large database of subscribers means we can request freebies or big reductions from large well-known companies, offering bigger and better Sweet Potato Gifts!
  3. BookPotato to be able to fund it’s own costs -We can only continue offering BookPotato.org if we can make it a sustainable business. If you agree with our cause then please prioritise buying books from BookPotato or give us a chance to sell YOUR book on BookPotato.
